FEROXSM TCE Reduction - Oklahoma Facility
The FEROXSM technology was recently applied at an active government facility in Oklahoma. Approximately 9,000 pounds of FEROXSM zero-valent iron (ZVI) powder were injected into the subsurface using our atomized gas injection method. This approach resulted in the uniform distribution, over a 50-foot radius, around the injection well. The objective of the project was to remediate TCE in the groundwater at concentrations as high as 1,100 µg/liter.

Contamination at the site is found primarily in an upper saturated zone consisting of clay, silty clay and fine-grained sands interbedded with cemented sandstone layers. The presence of underground utilities and surface structures made conventional trenching or excavation not possible. As part of the injection, Pneumatic Fracturing was first applied in seven boreholes at depths ranging from 12 to 31 feet below ground surface to increase the effective permeability of the formation prior to the introduction of the FEROXSM powder.

An extensive groundwater sampling and verification program was used to assess the effectiveness of the FEROXSM process. In addition to a baseline sampling, four post-injection sampling events took place to monitor changes in VOC concentrations as well as geochemical, biological, and field parameters.

CVOC analysis of post-injection ground water samples indicated that TCE concentrations within the plume had decreased by as much as 100% in monitoring wells located within and adjacent to the treatment zone within 3 months of the injection. Some corresponding concentration increase in the TCE daughter products, including cis-1,2-DCE, was observed. Based upon benchscale testing and prior field applications it is expected that the daughter products will be treated by the FEROXSM as well.
