FeroxSM technology applications at various sites across the nation
ARS' proprietory FeroxSM Technology, has been successfully applied at numerous sites across the country and overseas as a cost-effective method for in-situ remediation. The patented FeroxSM technology consists of the integration of two commercially proven processes to treat groundwater and soils contaminated with halogenated organic compounds, and/or leachable heavy metals. Following is a selection of recent projects where FeroxSM technology was used in remediation.
Federal Government Facility - AL Case Study#12 The FeroxSM process was applied under this project at an active federal government facility located in the Southern USA. The remedial action was implemented under the CERCLA program, targeting a former waste holding pond. The project scope included the installation of two FeroxSM treatment zones: a 3000-sq. ft Source Area Treatment Zone and a 450-foot long by 60-foot wide Downgradient Treatment Zone. Based on field observation and pressure monitoring, the injection process was a success in effectively dispersing the FeroxSM powder into the targeted zones. The project is under the post-injection monitoring program.
Manufacturing Facility - NJ Case Study#2 The FeroxSM process was applied under this project at a former manufacturing facility located in Totowa, New Jersey. The remedial action was implemented under the NJDEP ISRA program initiated by the cessation of operations at the facility Utilizing a direct-push injection nozzle system, 4,200 pounds of a special formulation zero-valent iron (ZVI) powder were injected into the formation. The injection nozzle was advanced by a vibratory drilling technique to the design depths. The resulting data showed evidence of dechlorination of the TCE. As TCE concentrations decreased after the first post-injection event, concentrations of cis-1,2-DCE, TCE’s sequential dechlorination daughter product, showed corresponding increases.
